Borussia Dortmund Advances to Club World Cup Quarter-Finals with a Hard-Fought Win Over Monterrey

Borussia Dortmund has joined Bayern Munich in the quarter-finals of the FIFA Club World Cup following a 2-1 victory over Liga MX’s Monterrey. This makes the Bundesliga the only major European league with two teams in the final eight of the competition, a testament to the strength of German football.

A Nervy Victory

Dortmund looked in control after Serhou Guirassy’s brace (14’ & 24’) in the first half, but the game took a turn in the second half when German Berterame pulled one back for Monterrey just three minutes after the restart (48’). Despite several heart-stopping moments, including a late header from former Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos that sailed wide, Dortmund held on to secure the win.

“It was difficult,” Guirassy said after the game. “We had a good first half. The second half was a bit harder, but we won, and that is all that matters.”

Clinical Finishing Makes the Difference

Although Monterrey dominated possession in the second half, Dortmund's clinical finishing proved to be the deciding factor. Despite having 58% of the ball, Monterrey finished the game with an xG of just 0.83, while Dortmund posted an xG of 1.61. Guirassy’s two goals, including a well-taken header for the winner, were key to Dortmund’s progression.

Guirassy’s Impressive Contribution

Guirassy now leads the tournament with five goals in five games. After an impressive 2024/25 UEFA Champions League campaign, where he scored 13 goals in 14 matches, his signing from Stuttgart for €18 million ($21 million) last summer is already paying off. His performance against Monterrey underlined why Dortmund acted quickly to bring him to the club.

Financial Gains and What's Next

With their progression to the quarter-finals, Dortmund has earned $52.325 million from the tournament so far, an increase from their initial earnings of $26.6 million. They will now receive an additional $13.125 million for advancing to the next stage, placing them among the highest earners in the competition, trailing only Bayern Munich, PSG, and Chelsea.

Looking ahead, Dortmund will face Real Madrid in the quarter-finals. The Spanish giants defeated Dortmund in the 2024 Champions League final, but Guirassy and his teammates are eager to seek revenge. "It is going to be tough, but we will prepare and do our best,” said Guirassy.

Financial Stakes for Squad Reinforcements

A victory over Real Madrid would not only see Dortmund advance to the semifinals but also bring in another $21 million, which will be crucial for strengthening the squad this summer. With the sale of Jamie Gittens to Chelsea for €64 million ($75 million), the Club World Cup earnings will provide Dortmund with the necessary funds to enhance their attack and midfield.

Dortmund's journey to the semifinals will be a tough one, but with Guirassy leading the charge, the Black and Yellows are focused on continuing their quest for glory in the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup.
