Manchester United advanced to the EFL Cup quarterfinals with a 5-2 victory against Leicester City at Old Trafford, marking the beginning of a new era after Erik ten Hag's dismissal from the club earlier this week.

Until a permanent successor is found, the squad will be led by Ruud van Nistelrooy, a former player for the club and an assistant coach under Ten Hag.

Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes scored twice to give the Dutch manager a flying start in Wednesday's round-of-16 match against Leicester City, which was Nistelrooy's first official assignment as United manager.

Casemiro scored United's first goal in the 15th minute with a long-range corner kick that went over the crossbar and into the far top corner of the net.

Just two minutes before halftime, the hosts increased their advantage via Argentine teenager Alejandro Garnacho, who finished off a cross from the left side of the field at the far post after no one had marked him.

In the 33rd minute, Bilal El Khannous drew one back for Leicester City. Three minutes later, James Justin's head deflected Fernandes' free kick into the net, giving Fernandes his first goal of the match.

Casemiro scored both of his goals in the 39th minute after collecting a loose ball inside the penalty area. Just before halftime, Conor Coady scored to extend the lead to 4-2.

At the 59th minute of the second half, Memeh Caleb Okoli sent a short pass to Danny Ward, who was set up by Fernandes. Ward was able to dribble past the goalie and grab on to the ball, scoring the lone goal of the half.

Despite Van Nistelrooy's promising start, the Dutchman's future at Manchester United is in doubt as the club is close to hiring Ruben Amorim, the current manager of Sporting Lisbon, on a permanent basis.

Tottenham eliminated Manchester City from the tournament with a 2-1 victory in the second round of 16 match in the English Football League Cup. There was a 3-2 victory for Brighton for Liverpool and a 3-0 triumph for Arsenal over Preston.

At the same time as Crystal Palace surprised Aston Villa 2-1 at home, Chelsea also lost 2-0 to Newcastle United at Saint James' Park, so eliminating them from the tournament.
