: Man Utd sack coach Erik ten Hag

After a disappointing start to the season, Manchester United have decided to part ways with manager Erik ten Hag. The club in the Premier League confirmed the news on Monday.

After losing to West Ham on Sunday, United fell to fourteenth in the league. This is United's fourth loss in nine league games, and they have won just once in their previous eight games in all competitions.

"Erik ten Hag has left his role as Manchester United men's first-team manager," said a club statement.

"Erik was appointed in April 2022 and led the club to two domestic trophies, winning the Carabao Cup in 2023 and the FA Cup in 2024.

"We are grateful to Erik for everything he has done during his time with us and wish him well for the future."

United added former striker Ruud van Nistelrooy, who returned to the club as Ten Hag's assistant in July, would now serve as interim manager "whilst a permanent head coach is recruited."

Ten Hag, United's Dutch manager, had presided over the club's worst start to a Premier League season since the 1989–90 season before their defeat to West Ham.

After an internal evaluation of his status last season after an eighth-place Premier League finish, United co-owner Jim Ratcliffe retained the 54-year-old as manager despite the many questions about his continued employment.

Following the unexpected FA Cup final triumph over Manchester City in May, Ten Hag was granted a one-year contract extension until June 2026.

But he couldn't fix his team's problems from the previous year.

Ten Hag, who won two titles in his two full seasons as manager of Ajax before joining United in May 2022, has recently vehemently defended his record.

By prevailing against Newcastle in the 2023 League Cup final, United finally won a trophy after a six-year drought.

In an excellent first season under Ten Hag, United reached the FA Cup final and finished third in the Premier League.

But in his second season, everything went wrong due to substantial player injuries, the ineffectiveness of high-profile acquisitions, and Ten Hag's inability to establish a consistent playing style, resulting in a string of humiliating losses.

United was eliminated from the Champions League in the group stage after losing to Galatasaray and FC Copenhagen. At Old Trafford, other teams that won that season were Bournemouth, Brighton, and Fulham.

Recently, United underwent extensive off-field changes, including hiring a new chief executive, sports director, and technical director, as part of adopting a new sporting structure backed by co-owner Ratcliffe.

Ten Hag was granted a stay of execution after his shocking FA Cup final triumph against Pep Guardiola's unstoppable City team at Wembley.

There was little time for United's FA Cup triumph to serve as a springboard to more consistent success in the early going of the new season.

United lost their first two Europa League matches against FC Twente and Porto, while Tottenham and Liverpool cruised to 3-0 victories at Old Trafford in September.

Despite his flaws, Ten Hag was only in charge for a brief spell during United's overall downfall after iconic former manager Alex Ferguson retired in 2013.

Ever since Ferguson left his position as manager at Old Trafford, five permanent managers have come and gone. United have failed to fight for the Premier League championship, despite winning it thirteen times under Ferguson.
