Manchester City’s Summer Spending Begins with Tijjani Reijnders Transfer
Manchester City's promised summer spending has begun with the agreement of a fee for Milan's Tijjani Reijnders. The 26-year-old midfielder will cost €55m (£46.3m) and has agreed personal terms for a five-year contract.
Reijnders Set to Join as First of Many Signings
Club head Khaldoon al-Mubarak promised a slew of new signings before City participated in the Club World Cup, and the Dutch international is the first of them. For FIFA's next tournament, a separate transfer window has been established.
With 15 goals, offensive midfielder Reijnders was an upbeat presence in Milan's lackluster season. A City team that is drastically different from the one that lost the title in 2024–25 is quickly taking shape in the wake of Kevin De Bruyne's departure and the anticipated departure of many more players, perhaps including Jack Grealish. They are associated with Rayan At-Nouri, the full-back for the Wolves.
City's Rebuild Plan in Full Swing
"We already started that rebuild of this team in January," Khaldoon said last week in a club interview. "We have identified who exactly are the targets and in what positions, and we have our clear number one option, our clear number two option. Our objective is to try to be ready with the new squad for the Club World Cup."
Claudio Echeverri, who had been signed the year before, was used as a surprise replacement in Crystal Palace's FA Cup final loss, and City spent about £180 million on Abdukodir Khusanov, Omar Marmoush, Nico González, Vitor Reis, Juma Bah, and Christian McFarlane during the January transfer window.
Guardiola's Stance on Squad Size
Pep Guardiola, meanwhile, has made it clear he does not want to work with a bloated squad, despite City's heavy workload in the US and next season. He said last month: "As a manager, I cannot train 24 players, and every time I select, I have to have four, five, six stay in Manchester at home because they cannot play. This is not going to happen. I said to the club: 'I don't want that.'”
Reijnders on Premier League Move
"The clubs are still in talks. For me, it's wait and see now," Reijnders told Voetbal International. "The Premier League is a great league; you dream of that as a little boy."
Wirtz Move Not Firmed Up
Florian Wirtz of Bayer Leverkusen was allegedly not moved for financial reasons despite strong rumors linking him with Liverpool. For Premier League teams, the transfer window is open from June 1 to June 10 and again from June 16 to September 1.
Jack Grealish's Future at City in Doubt
Grealish will not be on City's 35-man roster for the Club World Cup, as first reported by the Telegraph on Wednesday. Not only did the England international sit out Palace's loss at Wembley, but he also skipped Fulham, the last Premier League match of the season.
There will be more talk about the 29-year-old's future with the Etihad as a result of his absence from the US competition this summer. After undergoing Achilles surgery, midfielder Mateo Kovacic was also ruled out of the competition.
