Mbappe wins European Golden Shoe for first time

Kylian Mbappe collected his first European Golden Shoe after his two-goal effort in Real Madrid's 2-0 triumph against Real Sociedad on Saturday.

The French attacker won the La Liga top scorer title with 31 goals in his first season in Spain.

Mbappe's brace in Real Madrid's last game sent him to the top of the charts, beating Liverpool's Mohamed Salah with 29 goals and Sporting Lisbon's Victor Gyokeres with 39 league goals.

A weighted scoring system computes the European Golden Shoe rankings. Because of the point weighting, Gyokeres finished second while scoring eight more league goals than Mbappe.

Two points apiece are granted for goals scored in the top five European leagues—Premier League, La Liga, Bundesliga, Serie A, and Ligue 1; leagues placed sixth to 22nd by UEFA's coefficient receive 1.5 points for each goal.

To equal Mbappe for the trophy, Mohamed Salah need a hat-trick in Liverpool's penultimate Premier League game against Crystal Palace on Sunday.  Salah fell shy of matching Mbappe's total after scoring once in a 1-1 tie.

Third Real player to win the European Golden Shoe Mbappe teams Real Madrid classics Hugo Sanchez (1989-90) and Cristiano Ronaldo (2010-11, 2013-14, 2014-15).

 Linked with a possible summer transfer to Arsenal, Victor Gyokeres missed Mbappe since Sporting's league season concluded the previous weekend.

Including a goal in Sporting's 3-1 Portuguese Cup final victory against Benfica on Sunday, the Swedish striker ended the season with an impressive 53 goals in 51 outings.

The last five in the weighted rankings were Mbappe (62 points), Gyokeres (58.5), Salah (58), Robert Lewandowski (54), and Harry Kane (52).
