A video purporting to show Premier League referee David Coote making disparaging comments about former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp went viral on Monday, leading to his suspension.
Premier League referee David Coote has been banned, according to the refereeing organization Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL). The video reportedly included insulting statements directed against Liverpool and their former manager Jurgen Klopp. The video went viral on Monday. "David Coote has been suspended with immediate effect pending a full investigation. PGMOL will be making no further comment until that process is complete," said the statement.
We don't know when or how the video became viral, but it seems to include David Coote—or someone looking like him—having a conversation with another guy on a couch. A question addressed to Coote in the video seems to have been posed after a Liverpool game: "What did you think of the Liverpool game earlier?"
Allegedly, Coote's response was: "Liverpool were s***." The man then continued as he asked: "What do you think of Jurgen Klopp?" To which Coote responded: "C***. Absolute c***. "Aside from having a right pop at me when I refereed them against Burnley in lockdown, he accused me of lying then had a right f****** pop at me. I've got no interest in speaking to someone who's f****** arrogant. So I do my best not to speak to him. James Milner's alright."
As he went on, the Englishman described a match in which he had the role of fourth official. "You can see me there [in a picture on his phone] with a mask on. Got to be careful. We're social distancing; we're two meters apart. But my God, German c***. F*** me," he said. The video ended as Coote stating that he did not want the video to be shared, as he firmly said: "Just to be clear, that f****** last video can't go anywhere. Seriously."
Coote, 42, has officiated six Premier League games, the most recent being Saturday's 2-0 victory for Liverpool against Aston Villa. During Klopp's tenure at Anfield, he also served as the match referee for many Liverpool matches. The PGMOL's investigations are still in their early stages, but Coote is still under investigation. Despite being approached, neither Liverpool nor the FA have commented on the situation.
