Flamingos defeat Dominican Republic in the U-17 Women's W'Cup; meet US in the q'final.

In the 2024 FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup, the Flamingos, the national women's soccer team from Nigeria, defeated the hosts, the Dominican Republic, in Santo Domingo early Wednesday morning, thanks to a goal scored in the 89th minute.

After receiving the ball 25 yards out, midfielder Shakirat Moshood unleashed a robust left-footed shot that beat the Dominican goalie and scored her fourth tournament goal.

Before team captain Taiwo Afolabi scored, the Dominican goalkeeper had to make a stop after the video assistant referee flagged a Moshood effort as offside fifteen minutes into the match.

Moshood scored for the Flamingos as the team continued to pour pressure on their opponents after halftime.

The Flamingos have won three games in a row, putting them atop Group A, ahead of New Zealand, the hosts Dominican Republic, and Ecuador. Thanks to their victory in their last group match, they have nine points now.

With two wins, eight goals scored, and one goal allowed, the Flamingos have been on fire in the South American country.

Group A kicked off with a 4-1 thrashing of New Zealand at Cibao Stadium in Santiago de los Caballeros, and Coach Bankole Olowokoore's squad then cruised to a 4-0 victory against Ecuador.

"I will not change our messages to Nigerians but to thank and appreciate them for their support," Olowokoore had said, expressing her confidence that the girls will bring pride to Nigeria during the tournament. Having held these vigils, their support will not be in vain; therefore, they should continue. They can always count on us to bring them happiness and pride whenever they look on. We promised them this before we left Nigeria, and now we're making good on our word so they may be proud of us.

According to the FIFA U-17 WWC X account, a record 13,535 spectators attended the Dominican Republic National Team's match against Nigeria.

In the quarterfinal round, the Flamingos will take against their American counterpart.
