Sunday afternoon’s La Liga match between Real Madrid and Getafe at Bernabeu will allow the Spanish team to bounce back after a poor Champions League performance.
Getafe will be coming off a 3-0 Copa del Rey win against Manises on Tuesday, while Los Blancos will be looking to bounce back from Wednesday night’s 2-0 European Cup loss to Liverpool.
Previous Matches and Head-to-head
Carlo Ancelotti’s Real Madrid have lost three of their last five matches across all competitions. They suffered devastating home losses to AC Milan and Barcelona in late October and early November. Then they lost 2-0 to Liverpool in Wednesday night’s Champions League match, a well-deserved defeat.
At Anfield, Kylian Mbappe and Mohamed Salah both missed penalty kicks, and Liverpool went on to win 2-0 thanks to goals from Alexis Mac Allister and Cody Gakpo. As a result, Real Madrid dropped to 24th place in the Champions League standings, clinging on to a playoff spot by a hair.
On the other hand, the defending champions are back in the hunt for the league title thanks to a two-game winning streak in which they scored seven goals and allowed zero goals. This form and Barcelona's little slump have propelled Los Blancos to the top.
Currently, Ancelotti’s squad is in second place in La Liga, four points behind Barcelona (who have a game in hand). They have three league matches remaining against Girona, Athletic Bilbao, and Getafe, all of which they will want to win before a crucial Champions League match on 10 December away to Atalanta BC.
With 18 points from seven home matches, Real Madrid has the most excellent home record in La Liga this season. In contrast, Getafe has had a tough time away from its stadium, collecting only two points from six matches.
A lot is riding on this weekend’s matchup between Real Madrid and Getafe. In 38 prior La Liga meetings, Getafe has won only six times, and they last defeated Los Blancos at Bernabeu in February 2008.
The only time the Deep Blue Ones have triumphed over Real Madrid since August 2012 was in a close match at Bernabeu; Real Madrid won that match 2-1 last season. In addition, Getafe will be slightly more rested than Real Madrid, having played on Tuesday night compared to Wednesday.
With their 3-0 win over Manises earlier this week and their 2-0 league triumph over Real Valladolid on 22 November, Jose Bordalas’s team advanced to the Copa del Rey’s second round.
Getafe earned 13 points from 14 matches this season—two wins, seven draws, and five defeats—and are sit in fifteenth place, three points clear of the relegation zone.
They have struggled offensively this season, scoring only ten goals in 14 league games (tied for second-worst in the division). Defensively, they have been second-best, allowing just 11.
Real Madrid vs. Getafe Team News
Real Madrid will undoubtedly be without Vinicius Junior, Eduardo Camavinga, Eder Militao, Dani Carvajal, and David Alaba for this weekend's match in Madrid.
Jude Bellingham, Brahim Diaz, and Mbappe are all healthy despite worries about their condition during the match against Liverpool. At the same time, Aurelien Tchouameni and Rodrygo may return to the team after recent problems.
Federico Valverde might shift back into midfield if Lucas Vazquez triumphantly returns to the team. Dani Ceballos could start in the center, and Luka Modric could be relegated to the bench.
Ancelotti may also bench Ferland Mendy in favor of Fran Garcia at left-back.
As for Getafe, Carles Alena will miss the match due to a muscle injury, while Borja Mayoral, the former Real Madrid attacker, will likely only be able to sit on the bench due to his muscular ailment.
Bertug Yildirim and Djene Dakonam, two key players for the visitors, received milestone yellow cards in last weekend’s league match against Real Valladolid and will miss Sunday’s match due to suspension.
Despite being on loan at Getafe from Real Madrid, 20-year-old Alvaro Rodriguez is free to play this weekend and will likely start up front for the Blues after scoring their first goal against Real Valladolid.
Our predictions
Real Madrid to win and over 2.5 goals @ 2.09 on Sky247.ng
This weekend, Real Madrid will face a Getafe team that is very solid defensively, and they will once again be without several key players. We predict Los Blancos will score three points on Sunday after a closely contested encounter despite Real Madrid’s obvious superiority in this game.
