Morocco defeated Egypt 6-0 on Thursday to claim bronze in the men's football Olympic tournament. Soufiane Rahimi scored twice, while captain Achraf Hakimi scored an incredible free-kick.
Among the scorers in the resounding victory at the Stade de la Beaujoire in Nantes were Rahimi (now eight goals) and Abde Ezzalzouli, Bilal El Khannouss, and Akram Nakach.
With a goal by Hakimi in the 94th minute, Morocco became the first North African country to win an Olympic football gold.
Although they lost in the semi-finals to Spain, Morocco advanced to the tournament by defeating Egypt in last year's Under-23 Africa Cup of Nations final. They started the tournament by beating Argentina.
Ezzalzouli of Real Betis of Spain scored a spectacular goal well inside the box halfway through the first half to put Morocco ahead. Their triumph qualified them for the Olympics, and they claimed a medal in spectacular style.
Shortly after, Rahimi doubled the lead by heading home a cross from Ezzalzouli. The Atlas Lions then cruised to victory in the second half.
Rahimi doubled the lead after receiving a feed from Ilias Akhomach and finishing it with a low drive that found the bottom right corner of the net. El Khannouss added a third goal with a low shot from beyond the area.
Rahimi, the tournament's leading scorer with four goals, set up defender Akram Nakach for a goal to make it five.
But only three minutes before halftime, Hakimi saved his most excellent free shot of the match, a rocket from 30 meters out, and he found the back of the goal. Morocco has scored seventeen goals in six games played so far at the Games.
On Friday, in Paris, host France will face off against Spain in the gold medal match.
