Paris 2024: D’Tigress Lost 88-74 to USA in Quarterfinals

After a crushing quarterfinal loss against the USA (88-74) on Wednesday, D'Tigress, the senior women's basketball team from Nigeria, was eliminated from the 2024 Olympic Games. 

The United States carried on as usual with their successful championship defense, while Nigeria retired from the tournament as basketball heroes.

The Nigerians aimed to advance to the semi-finals by eliminating the Americans, who had already surpassed expectations by reaching the round of 16—something that no other African team has accomplished.

Rena Wakama's team got off to a great start, showing no fear of the United States, aiming for an incredible ninth straight gold medal.

When A'ja Wilson scored an early layup, the United States took the lead and never looked back.

D'Tigress knew they would have to summon all their might to defeat the United States squad, which has eight players who were formerly the first overall choice in the WNBA draft. However, they were not about to back down, and they quickly evened the odds.

Breanna Stewart scored to break a brief scoring drought after a stagnant first minute by converting a Chelsea Gray assist for a transition layup. The score was tied at four each until Pallas Kunaiyi-Akpanah of Nigeria scored a layup in the nick of time.

D'Tigress had to play catch-up the whole game because Jackie Young, who began the game on defense, scored two goals early to put the game away.

D'Tigress may be pleased with their effort in the fourth quarter since the match at the Bercy Arena did not replicate the United States' 56-point victory against Nigeria in February during the qualifiers in Belgium.

The African champions were down 3-0 in the first three quarters, but they stunned the basketball world in the fourth quarter, winning 26-12 and capturing the attention of fans worldwide.

D'Tigress has significantly impacted the basketball world and is now heading home.
