A home victory over Chelsea would allow Arsenal to surpass Chelsea by three points atop the Premier League standings. Their 2-0 victory against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday night put them back atop the league. Liverpool and them are on same points, but Liverpool has a better goal differential. Despite being down a point and with a game in hand, Manchester City remain a significant threat.

The FA Cup semi-final on Saturday was a loss for Chelsea at the hands of Manchester City. That eliminated an additional possibility for their return to the European football league next season. The trip to Aston Villa and the home meeting against Tottenham, two teams ranked higher than them in the Premier League, are part of a difficult stretch that begins with this away match against Arsenal. Their chances of finishing in the top seven are heavily dependent on the outcomes of these three games.

Head to head and previous matches

As league leaders, Arsenal will not afford to lose Tuesday's match against Chelsea. They snapped a three-game losing streak and advanced to the Champions League with a 2-0 victory against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday.

With a victory against Chelsea, April may not have been as devastating as last season, when they almost lost the championship in that month. With this matchup, Arsenal will be aiming for their thirteenth home league victory of the year. After losing their previous Premier League encounter at home, they must now win their next match at the Emirates.

Only their second home league loss this season—a terrible 2-0 setback to Aston Villa—was so depressing. The Gunners had won their last five league matches at home before losing to Villa. They have scored 38 goals in 14 home league matches. Only four of their previous twenty-four Premier League home meetings have ended without a double-digit score.

It would be tremendously welcomed if we could duplicate last season's 3-1 home victory against Chelsea. It was a dramatic affair when these two teams played each other in reverse. Despite falling down 2-0 in the 77th minute, Arsenal rallied to draw level at Stamford Bridge.

It is not out of the question that Chelsea will be playing in Europe again next season. Their defeat to Manchester City in last week's FA Cup semi-final was bad news. The elimination of four English teams from Europe also renders the possibility of five English clubs competing in next year's Champions League exceedingly improbable.

A team seems to be eligible to participate in the Europa Conference League next season if they finish in the top seven. The Blues have a higher goal differential and this match in hand, putting them three points behind seventh-place Manchester United.

In the latter weeks of the season, they must enhance their performance on the road. Out of fifteen league games played away from home, they have managed only five victories, with the previous three games ending in draws. The fact that they had a lead in all of those games only adds insult to injury.

Our Prediction

Arsenal to win

If Arsenal beats Chelsea, they can take a three-point lead atop the Premier League. However, losing points would be catastrophic, particularly since Manchester City will have a two-game lead after this encounter. The Gunners won on Saturday to get back on track and have a shot at a second victory against Chelsea, who has been all over the place. The Gunners will prevail at home against the Blues, according to our forecast.
