On Wednesday night, Borussia Dortmund will face Ulsan HD in Cincinnati in an attempt to solidify their spot in the knockout round of the Club World Cup.

Borussia Dortmund, who just avoided an epic collapse last weekend by snatching a 4-3 win over Mamelodi, will be looking for a far more normal game tonight. 

The German powerhouses are planning to launch a serious championship challenge this summer and aim to secure a spot in the knockout round of the Club World Cup with a consistent performance. 

After a protracted frenzy, BVB concluded the 2024–25 season with a 3-0 victory over Kiel on May 17.  After returning from the international break in March, Kovac's squad has won all five of their Bundesliga matches by an aggregate score of 17-6. They have only lost once in all competitions since then.  Dortmund are justifiably considered a heavy favorite after regaining their clinical advantage in the last third.

Although the South Korean powerhouse Ulsan may have achieved a historic feat last season by winning the K League title for the third consecutive year, Kim Pan-gon's squad has struggled to find any fluidity this season.  After suffering consecutive losses to Fluminense and Mamelodi to kick off their Club World Cup campaign, the Tigers have already had their hopes of advancing to the knockout round dashed. 

Not only are Ulsan in last place in Group F, but they have also shown some concerning defensive shortcomings. 

The former Hong Kong manager's team has struggled to find the back of the net in their last six games across all competitions, losing 3-1 on the road against local rivals Jeonbuk to close out May.

Similarly, the Blues have a monumental task ahead of them since they have registered only one clean sheet in the previous six weeks.

Borussia Dortmund have officially announced that Nico Schlotterbeck and Emre Can will not be participating in the summer league due to their ongoing injuries, respectively.  Marcel Sabitzer, an Austrian international, deserves a complete return after getting a weekend off and making only a substitute appearance.

Jobe Bellingham should continue to play in the center of the field when he makes his BVB debut on Saturday against Mamelodi after a big-money transfer from Sunderland.  Jamie Gittens will be aiming for playing time despite the persistent rumors of a summer transfer to Chelsea.

South Korean teenager Myung-Guan Seo is likely to sit out Wednesday night's match for Ulsan, just as he did over the weekend against Fluminense, due to a suspected muscle injury.  Matias Lacava, a Venezuelan international, may start for his team in the Club World Cup this summer.

The German giants will be looking for a more conventional performance today, even if Borussia Dortmund pulled themselves to a 4-3 win over Mamelodi last weekend.  With a declaration of purpose to secure a spot in the World Club Cup knockout round, Kovac's squad should be sniffing a golden chance on Wednesday night.

The South Korean team has, understandably, struggled mightily defensively, as they have lost their previous three matches in all competitions by a combined score of 8-3.

Erick Farias, who just completed a permanent transition from Brazilian team Juventude in preparation for the 2025 season, should maintain his position as runner-up in Cincinnati.  Darijan Bojanic, a former Swedish international, will begin in the center of the field.
