Brazil vs. Uruguay

With a 2026 World Cup qualifier in sight, Brazil will host Uruguay on Tuesday night in hopes of getting back on track. Brazil currently sits in fourth place in the league, while Uruguay is in second place.

Uruguay defeated Colombia in a thrilling shootout, 3-2, to move up a spot in the standings, while Selecao are riding high on a 1-1 draw with Venezuela.

Previous Matches and Head-to-head

Brazil has failed to impress in their current qualifying campaign. With 17 points after 11 matches, they are in fourth place in the standings, with a record of five victories, two draws, and four losses.

With a win on Tuesday night, the Selecao would be in a solid position in the division, five points behind champions Argentina and just two behind second-placed Uruguay.

The previous time these two teams met, Dorival Junior's squad gained a lead thanks to a goal from Raphinha; however, Venezuela scored just after halftime, and the teams drew 1-1.

Not only did Brazil lose 2-0 to the Sky Blues in the group stage match in October, but they had also lost their past two matches vs Uruguay, including a 2024 Copa America quarterfinal defeat that went to penalties.

Despite their five World Cup victories, the Green Yellows have failed to surpass the quarterfinals in their previous two tournament appearances (including 2022).

As indicated, Uruguay will be riding high after their 3-2 victory against Colombia. The first 90 minutes of the match ended with Colombia tying the score, and the two teams would split the points in a 2-2 tie heading into extra time.

But Manuel Ugarte had other plans. He scored in the eleventh minute of extra time to give Uruguay a last-second triumph. As a consequence, Uruguay is now in second place in the standings, only three points behind Argentina, who are leaders.

With five wins, four draws, and two losses out of eleven games in the section, Marcelo Bielsa's team is riding high heading into this match after sweeping Brazil in their previous two encounters.

Even though the Sky Blues had won the World Cup twice before (in 1930 and 1950), they didn't get it beyond the quarterfinals in 2022, so fans are hoping for a significant upgrade in 2026.

The victory against Colombia was Uruguay's first since a penalty shootout triumph over Canada in the 2024 Copa America third-place playoff; in their previous six matches across all competitions, they have split the spoils four times.

Brazil x Uruguay Team News

Due to suspension, Monaco defender Vanderson will not be available for Tuesday's match against Brazil, while Guilherme Arana will not participate because of an ankle injury.

With Vinicius Junior, Raphinha, and Savinho all expected to start up front, the 23-year-old Igor Jesus will spearhead the attack against Venezuela and aim for his second goal on the international stage.

Several key Brazilian players, including Rodrygo, Alisson Becker, and Eder Militao, will not be able to participate in this match due to injuries.

With the 33-year-old Danilo in contention to earn his 65th cap in this match, Vanderson is expected to be substituted.

With Ugarte possibly earning a spot in Uruguay's starting lineup, head coach Bielsa can make a single change from the starting lineup that faced Colombia at the start of the match.

The midfielder from Manchester United scored a last-minute winner in their previous match against Colombia, so he will likely start for the Sky Blues against Brazil. Otherwise, they may go with the same lineup.

Former Manchester United forward Facundo Pellistri will likely start again in a wide position for Panathinaikos. At the same time, Darwin Nunez, who has scored thirteen goals in thirty-two international matches, will lead the line for Liverpool.

We have a hard time picking a winner between these two sides, but Uruguay will be strong enough to earn a draw on Tuesday despite Brazil's lacklustre qualifying performance.
