Inter Milan vs. Monaco: UCL Match Preview, Odds & Prediction

Inter Milan and Monaco will meet at San Siro on the eighth matchday of the Champions League phase. Both teams aim to guarantee a straight path to the round of 16.

Although these two clubs and those in the third to thirteenth positions still have a shot at reaching or missing the top eight, the hosts are in a commanding lead. Monaco will need a monumental performance from their opponent to have any hope of advancing.

Previous Matches and Head-to-head

Under Simone Inzaghi's leadership, Inter have had a fantastic week, winning both of their away games with ease and professionalism.

Following last week's 1-0 win over Sparta Prague in Prague, Inter maintained their pressure on Napoli for first place in Serie A with a 4-0 hammering of Lecce on Sunday.

The Nerazzurri are now in eighth place in Serie A, three points behind Napoli. However, with last week's victory in Prague, they moved into eighth place in the Champions League, so it's very improbable that the 2023 finalists will be eliminated from the competition, regardless of tonight's outcome.

Based on their recent form, Inter should also be unconcerned. Inter have won their last 12 home Champions League matches, their longest winning streak since they were undefeated in the first 28 games played at San Siro in the tournament from 1963 to 2002.

As they enter this matchup, Inter have kept five straight home clean sheets in Europe, and they have allowed only one goal all league season, making their defensive solidity their greatest strength.

After previously denying teams like Manchester City and Arsenal, visiting Monaco face a formidable challenge. No club has maintained six consecutive clean sheets at home in the UCL since Atletico Madrid in 2016, while the last Italian side to accomplish this feat was Juventus in 2005.

After a scoreless draw away to Man City and a 4-0 victory over Red Star Belgrade to start the Champions League, Inter have won their previous five games in a row, except for one loss—away to Bayer Leverkusen—in that streak.

Even though they've lost both of their previous meetings with Inter at San Siro, Monaco is coming into this match on a high after defeating Aston Villa and getting back on track domestically against Rennes.

With a 3-2 victory against Rennes, Adi Hutter's squad avoided its longest losing streak in five and a half years. Before the weekend, they had lost their last four Ligue 1 games and had also been eliminated from the Coupe de France on penalties by Reims.

Regardless of how tough their last match may seem on paper, Monaco is back in the chase for the top eight on the continent after beating Villa.

As we enter matchday eight, the principality club is tied for tenth place with Leverkusen, who have clinched the last slot in the round of 16.

If Monaco wins this match by a resounding margin, they will pass Inter and secure a spot in the round of 16. However, they are winless in their previous ten Champions League away games.

The visitors' only victory in that streak occurred in Italy, at the Renato Dell'Ara in November against Bologna, which may be seen as a positive sign; yet, they will enter the game as heavy underdogs.

Inter Milan x Monaco Team News

Inzaghi rested important players like Nicolo Barella and Federico Dimarco in preparation for facing relegation threats over the weekend. He also took his time getting Yann Bisseck back into the lineup following an injury.

While Hakan Calhanoglu and Joaquin Correa are both out with calf injuries, Francesco Acerbi is out with a hamstring problem. Thus, Inter will be without its joint-top scorer in the Champions League so far.

The home team may again depend on their defensive strengths in this match. Yann Sommer has kept six clean sheets in seven games, keeping him close to Andre Onana's record for most Champions League club clean sheets in a season (eight in 2022-23).

Most of Monaco's injury concerns pertain to the attack; recruit Mika Biereth is not yet registered to play. Folarin Balogun and George Ilenikhena are also expected to sit this one out.

Because of this, the away team may need to score goals from the back. No team has had a greater percentage of goals scored by defenders in the league phase (31%), with the exception of Villa and Thilo Kehrer in Bologna.

However, Singo is questionable due to his absence from the previous match. At the same time, midfielder Denis Zakaria is also doubtful due to his early substitution in the last game, adding to his injury-plagued season.

Our Predictions

Inter Milan to win & Under 2.5 goals @ 4.30 on Sky247.ng

Another close game is likely, but the hosts should prevail since only 17 of Inter's last 22 Champions League games have included two goals or less. That number rises to six of their seven games this season.

Monaco has bounced back after a slow start to 2025, but this will be their most significant test for a long time; the visitors may have to settle for a playoff berth.
