New Update
Paris Saint Germain vs. Girona

At Wednesday night's Parc des Princes match, Paris Saint-Germain will face Girona, who are playing in their first Champions League competition of the 2024–25 season.

Their Spanish rivals shocked many by placing third in La Liga last season, whereas PSG have won six Ligue 1 titles in the past seven.

Previous Matches and Head-to-head

After beating Le Harve, Montpellier, and Lille, Paris Saint-Germain defeated Brest 3-1 at home last Saturday in a thrilling comeback encounter. This puts them in the unique position of being the only Ligue 1 side with a perfect record after four matches.

Just before halftime, Romain Del Castillo scored from the penalty spot to put Luis Enrique's team down. However, to secure a victory, Les Parisians scored three goals in a row, with Fabian Ruiz scoring once and Ousmane Dembele scoring twice.

With a remarkable +13 goal differential in the French top flight and, rightfully so, a positive start to the new season under their belts, PSG are getting ready for a jam-packed 19-day schedule of matches across all competitions, including their first two Champions League matches against Girona and Arsenal.

Since taking over in 2011, the dream of winning Europe's most coveted club football trophy has remained elusive for PSG's Qatari owners. Their only taste of success so far came in the 2019–20 season, when they lost the final to Bayern Munich.

With 36 home games in the competition since the start of 2012–13, PSG will be looking to get off to a good start in the newly expanded Champions League. They will confidently face Girona on Wednesday, having lost only one of their last 36 games, a 2-1 loss to Manchester United in October 2020.

After a historic 2023–24 La Liga campaign, Girona have had a tumultuous start to the current season, picking up seven points from two wins, one draw, and two losses in their first five matches.

After a sluggish start, the Blanquivermells defeated Osasuna and Sevilla 6-0 on aggregate. However, on Sunday, they were thrashed 4-1 by Barcelona, now top of the league and Catalan rivals.

A dominant Barça side took command at Estadi Montilivi thanks to goals from Lamine Yamal (2), Dani Olmo, and Pedri; ten minutes before the game's end, Christian Stuani scored a consolation goal.

Michel, who took over as head coach in 2021, will be eager to ensure Girona's players don't let the heavy home loss get them down for Wednesday's first-ever Champions League fixture.

The fact that the last three Spanish teams to participate in the Champions League—Villarreal in 2005–06, Sevilla in 2007–08, and Malaga in 2012–13—have all gone on to reach the knockout stages may serve as motivation for Girona, who is considered one of the underdogs this season due to the competition's expansion.

Paris Saint Germain x Girona Team News

In addition to Lucas Hernandez (ACL), Goncalo Ramos (ankle), and Presnel Kimpembe (Achilles), PSG's starting goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma (thigh) is out with an injury he sustained in the win over Brest, so new signing Matvey Safonov will likely get his first start for the club.

Lee Kang-in, Fabian Ruiz, and Joao Neves might all retain their positions in centre midfield, while Warren Zaire-Emery (calf) and Vitinha (ankle) are uncertain and will be checked before the start. Vitinha and Zaire-Emery did not participate in the victory against Brest.

Bradley Barcola, who scored four goals in as many matches for PSG this season, could form an attacking partnership with Dembele, Marco Asensio, or Randal Kolo Muani. At the same time, Enrique may consider bringing Marquinhos and William Pacho back to play in central defence instead of Milan Skriniar and Lucas Beraldo.

Regarding Girona, Ricard Artero is still out with an ankle injury, Justin is out with a shoulder injury, and Yangel Herrera is questionable for Wednesday's matchup after sitting out the loss to Barcelona with an adductor issue.

Oriol Romeu can play against PSG after missing the previous match against his parent club Barça. He will likely start in the middle of the field with Ivan Martin and Jhon Solis, who is 19 years old, with Donny van de Beek again serving as a substitute.

At the centre of the attack, Abel Ruiz will likely keep starting ahead of recruits Bojan Miovski and Stuani; on the wings, starts may be decided among Portu, Bryan Gil, Viktor Tsygankov, and Arnaut Danjuma.
