Copa America 2024: Peru x Chile, Match Preview, Odds and Predictions(22/06/2024)

Group A action between Peru and Chile kicks off Day Two of the 2024 Copa America on Friday at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

La Bicolor is undefeated in 2024, having defeated El Salvador 1-0 in their last warm-up game before this competition, while Chile defeated Paraguay 3-0 in their last friendly.

Peru x Chile Team News

Fossati put up an experienced team for this competition; Christian Cueva is two games away from reaching 100 international appearances, while Andre Carrillo is the lone player without a senior cap for Peru.

First-choice goalkeeper Pedro Gallese passed Hector Chumpitaz for seventh all-time with 106 caps in their friendly against El Salvador. Andy Polo is five appearances away from 50, and Carlos Zambrano needs three more to reach 75.

Gianluca Lapadula led this squad with three goals in the last Copa America. At the same time, Edison Flores scored the sole goal in their earlier meeting this month, drawing level with Cueva and former striker Franco Navarro for 10th all-time but way behind record goalscorer Paolo Guerrero (39).

Thomas Galdames is the lone player on the Chilean team without a cap; Guillermo Maripan is three short of 50, and Erick Pulgar may achieve it if he plays on Friday.

Should Claudio Bravo make his 110th appearance in this game, he would surpass Jean Beausejour and rank seventh on the all-time list of goalkeepers for this national team. Bravo needs two more appearances to reach 150.

In their win against Paraguay, Victor Davila scored twice—his second and third goals for the national team. Vargas scored the other goal, his 42nd in a Chilean jersey and second all-time behind record cap holder Alexis Sanchez (51).

Head To Head And Previous Matches

With five straight wins in all competitions, Peru will start their Copa America campaign in good shape.

Jorge Fossati, an experienced coach who has just turned this team's fortunes around, was brought in by the Peruvian Football Federation close to the conclusion of 2023.

The Peruvians had not won in seven games overall before the 71-year-old took over, and six had lost.

Their current CONMEBOL table position at the bottom with only two points from six games results from their bad run, which has harmed their hopes of making the 2026 World Cup.

Fossati has led his team to victory in three of his four games as manager, with only one goal conceded (4-1 win against the Dominican Republic).

The Copa America was last held in the United States in 2016 when Peru won their group and went undefeated in that tournament stage for the first time this century.

Since assuming leadership of Chile in January of this year, a familiar figure to many of these Peruvian players has gained momentum.

After leading Peru to their first World Cup berth since 1982, Ricardo Gareca has led La Roja to two victories in his three games as coach; their lone loss came in a friendly against France, the 2022 World Cup runners-up (3-2).

This squad has scored as many goals in three games overall under his direction as they did in their previous eight meetings combined.

When scoring the first goal, La Roja has only lost one game since 2020—the previously noted loss to France earlier this year.

The Chileans will remember the last Copa America hosted in the US, when they won the title for the second time in a row, even though they haven't qualified for a World Cup since 2014.

Though the last time these teams played in the Copa America, Los Incas dashed Chile's dreams of a third straight championship by defeating them 3-0 in the semi-finals, La Roja won 2-0 over Peru last October.

Our Predictions

Chile to win @2.02 on Sky247

Gareca nurtured numerous players currently playing for Peru, and he would possess the most expertise in dismantling their formidable defensive framework.

Chile has encountered more challenging competition than the Peruvians this year, and we anticipate that this will be a significant advantage for them in this match. Our pick is Chile to win their opening match.
