Euro 2024: Germany Road to the Final, Squad and Tactical Analysis

Germany will want to make home comforts matter when it hosts Euro 2024 next month.

The Mannschaft has won three European Championships, but not since 1996. Germany disappointed in the Euros three years ago, losing 2-0 to England in the round of sixteen.

Germany is the third favorite, with a 14.3% chance of victory as a host. However, given the difficult path to the championship, they aren't playing well and may not go beyond the quarterfinals.

The possible knockout stage opponents of Germany

Should they win Group A, Germany will play the Group C runners-up, probably Denmark. Should they survive, Spain, the Group B champions, will probably be their opponents. After that, there may be a semi-final against Portugsemifinaltherlands or Slovakia. And Germany might play France or England in the final.

Germany's critical players for this year's European Championship

Do not underestimate Niclas Fullkrug, even if other European countries seem to have more well-known goal scorers. The forward, who has shown he belongs on this stage, just got his Germany debut in late 2022 after a stellar goalscoring run with Werder Bremen. Fullkrug is still doing well internationally, even if he isn't scoring as often with Borussia Dortmund this season as at Werder Bremen.

Fullkrug has 11 goals in 15 appearances for Germany; he has not scored in only four. In one of the few bright spots when Germany was eliminated at the group stage, he scored on his debut twice in three World Cup games. Then, in 2023, during Germany's friendlies, Fullkrug went on two distinct three-game scoring runs, separated by only two games he did not score (playing less than 25 minutes in each game).

In 30 Bundesliga appearances for Dortmund this season, Fullkrug scored 12 goals, including one hat-trick. Not to mention, a goal against PSG in the Champions League semifinal helped Dorsemifinalch Wembley.

The other candidates are Stuttgart's 18-goal scorer Denis Undav, who was called up, and Kai Havertz, who has eight goals in his previous 13 league games for Arsenal.

Germany card magnets & top tacklers: Maximilian Mittelstadt

Maximilian Mittelstadt intends to leave his imprint on the German squad in the run-up to the Euros. Having excelled in the Bundesliga, the Stuttgart left-back was called up to the senior team for the first time. Die Roten is now in third place. Though Mittelstadt is primarily a defensive full-back, he has four assists out of 27 opportunities generated in the Bundesliga this season.

With 88 tackles, he is second in the Bundesliga; with 46 interceptions, he ranks sixth. However, Mittelstadt has also been given five yellow cards and has committed 27 fouls.

Germany's rising star: Maximilian Beier

In Wirtz and Jamal Musiala, Germany already has some young players making a name for themselves. However, Maximilian Beier seems to be the next big thing. Though only 21 years old, Beier is having a real breakout season with Hoffenheim in the Bundesliga after two years on loan with Hannover in the second division.

In 32 Bundesliga games in 2023–2024, the striker has scored 15 goals, including two against Borussia Dortmund and one against Bayer Leverkusen. He will contribute much to the team.

Germany's tactical analysis and formation

Since taking over for Hansi Flick as manager of Germany six games ago, Julian Nagelsmann has used three distinct formations. Four times, the 4-2-3-1 has been used, first with a 4-4-2 and subsequently a 3-4-2-1, with differing degrees of effectiveness. Nagelsmann is experimenting to see what method works best for a team with form issues over the last 18 months.

Given that he spent most of his time at Bayern Munich with the 4-2-3-1 system, it is most probable that Nagelsmann would choose that one. With Ilkay Gundogan pressing forward as the No. 10, Nagelsmann will probably employ Toni Kroos and Robert Andrich as the double pivot against the Netherlands and France. However, people like Pascal Groß and Aleksandar Pavlovic offer other possibilities.

With Maximilian Mittelstadt on the left and Antonio Rudiger and Jonathan Tah at center back, Kimmich slides to right-back in this formation. But with Manuel Neuer being recalled, it's now unclear who plays in goal.

With Kai Havertz lately selected as the starting center forward, Florian Wirtz and Jamal Musiala are set to flank Gundogan farther up the field.
