Euro 2024: Germany x Hungary, Match Preview, Odds and Predictions(19/06/2024)

The first game of the European Championship for Germany could not have improved. With Florian Wirtz and Jamal Musiala scoring, their rising talents were on show in a 5-1 rout of Scotland.

It was Germany's most significant tournament victory since they defeated them 7-1 in the 2014 World Cup semi-final and the most crucial win by a host team in the first match of a European Championship.

As usual, Germany can go to the knockout rounds with another win here after winning their opening game. Not right away, however. To be sure, Germany would have to see Scotland lose points against Switzerland. Even yet, should Germany suddenly fall so low, a victory would undoubtedly be sufficient to guarantee one of the finest third-place results.

However, Hungary is battling for its survival in Euro 2024 after entering the competition as one of the dark horses. Given Hungary won their Euro 2024 qualification group and went 14 games undefeated between November 2022 and March 2024, this is a startling change of events.

They have, meanwhile, already lost two of their last three games, including a 2-1 friendly loss to Ireland earlier this month and their first-ever 3-1 loss to Switzerland at Euro 2024. Hungary will thus need to win to genuinely maintain their chances of qualifying for the second round of the European Championships (they reached the last 16 in 2016).

Germany x Hungary Team News

After scoring against Scotland on Friday night and having four goals in his last seven international games, Kai Havertz of Arsenal will be used as a false nine again. Likewise, having both scored in Munich, Havertz will be joined in the final third by the dynamic pair of Florian Wirtz and Jamal Musiala.

Already declaring his intention to retire after the European Championships this summer, Toni Kroos will play in the middle of Germany's midfield with Robert Andrich of Bayer Leverkusen. Once again, starting right-back Joshua Kimmich will get his 88th cap for his country.

Servette defender Bendeguz Bolla came off the bench and replaced Adam Lang at halftime on Saturday afternoon, maybe entirely recalled at the MHPArena. Midweek, we will see Liverpool ace Dominik Szoboszlai, captain Hungary, and get his 44th cap.

Barnabas Varga, 29, will again play an essential part here after scoring a consolation goal against Switzerland over the weekend and now scoring three goals in his back-to-back outings over the last week.

Head To Head And Previous Matches

Julian Nagelsmann will be hoping for a similar performance from the hosts, who opened the European Championships this summer with a raging display in Munich as they smashed their way to a 5-1 victory over Scotland.

Knowing that they might formally reserve their knockout stage ticket on Wednesday night, the Nationalelf undoubtedly has a feverish atmosphere in their camp. Many have billed the host country for this summer as a serious contender, and the former head coach of RB Leipzig has yet to see his team lose in any of their last five games in all competitions.

Germany seems in good shape to launch a serious challenge over the next month after finishing their pre-EURO 24 preparations with a 2-1 home win over Greece.

Regarding the visitors, the Tricolours began their European tour with a terrible show over the weekend, even if Hungary may have won many accolades after their qualifying victory last year. After ultimately suffering a dismal 3-1 loss to Switzerland, Marco Rossi's team now has a tough road ahead if they want to secure a coveted knockout round ticket this month.

They will be worried about their ongoing problems on the foreign ground even though they claimed a stunning 1-0 win when they traveled to Germany in September 2022 during the Nations League play. Including a 2-1 defeat to Ireland earlier in the month, Hungary has only won one of their last seven games away from the Puskas Arena.

Our Predictions

Germany to win @1.25 on Sky247.ng

After opening the competition this summer with an incredible 5-1 victory against Scotland last week, Germany will undoubtedly be looking for a similar performance tonight. The Nationalelf will know they might secure a knockout stage ticket on Wednesday night, but they enjoy life under Nagelsmann's tutelage. The three-time European winners should win this one at home, even if Hungary may have won a stunning 1-0 victory when they visited Leipzig in September 2022 during Nations League play.
