Euro 2024: Poland x Netherlands, Match Preview, Team News, Odds and Predictions(16/06/2024)

Poland and Netherlands will play their Group D opener at Volksparkstadion in Hamburg. After winning 3-1 against Ukraine, Michal Probierz's team is full of confidence since the 51-year-old coach rested important forward Robert Lewandowski. Lewa is back in the starting lineup against the Oranje; Matty Cash, the right defender for Aston Villa, is out injured. Injuries also sideline Juventus forward Arkadiusz Milik.

But Ronald Koeman's team is aiming high for the EURO 2024 finals. Eventually, left-back Ian Maatsen of Borussia Dortmund joined the squad in place of injured Barcelona star Frenkie de Jong. Furthermore, sidelined by the injury is Feyenoord midfielder Mats Wieffer. Poland cannot beat the Netherlands without Cash and Milik, the injured pair, in the starting lineup, so the away victory should be considered. Memphis Depay will likely be first in line for the few guests.

Poland x Netherlands Team News

A significant setback for Poland on Sunday afternoon, the Eagles have already announced that record-breaking star Robert Lewandowski will not be playing this weekend due to a damaged bicep. Former Arsenal goalie Wojciech Szczęsny will start between the sticks as he approaches a significant Saudi Arabian transfer this summer.

Now playing with Basaksehir in Turkey, Krzysztof Piatek should be selected to take Lewandowski's position and lead Poland's attack on Sunday afternoon. Jan Bednarek of Southampton will accompany Arsenal defender Jakub Kiwior at the back.

Dealing with a significant double injury setback just days before the European Championships this summer began, Teun Koopmeiners and Barcelona star Frenkie de Jong will not be available for the Netherlands this month in Germany. Ian Maatsen was summoned after helping Borussia Dortmund reach the Champions League final the previous season.

Memphis Depay will lead Holland's attack this weekend, even if it has been revealed that he will depart Spanish giants Atletico Madrid this summer. Young PSG player Xavi Simons will join the former Manchester United misfit in the final third.

Head To Head And Previous Matches

First, Poland, who qualified for the European Championships this summer after winning a historic penalty shootout against Wales during the international break in March, should have a great atmosphere in their camp.

Michal Probierz's guys have undoubtedly gained some momentum, even if they may have needed help finding consistency throughout their qualifying trip last year.

Poland won their last five games in all competitions, capping off their pre-tournament preparations with a stunning 2-1 victory at home against Turkey. But the Eagles in Group D with France, Holland, and Austria will know they have an uphill fight to get a knockout stage ticket.

While the Netherlands may have had trouble getting back on track when Ronald Koeman returned two years ago, the European legends have significantly improved.

The Oranges are seen as a possible dark horse candidate this summer after finishing their pre-tournament training with consecutive 4-0 wins against Canada and Iceland. Starting 2024 with another 4-0 victory against Scotland, the former Barcelona manager will be expecting his team to make another impression here.

Indeed, building on their qualification victory from the previous year, Holland has won eight of their past ten games in all competitions. Equally, the Netherlands, who have astonishingly not lost to Poland since 1979, are determined to make a late push over the next month.

Our Predictions

Netherlands to win @1.58 on Sky247.ng

Holland will surely be eager to start their European journey on Sunday afternoon, having finished their pre-EURO 24 preparations with a great flurry. The Netherlands will be motivated by a dominant record against their Group D opponents, Poland, who they defeated 2-0 in September 2022 during their last Nations League encounter. We trust Koeman's team to create an early impression at the Volksparkstadion, as they have won their past 11 consecutive games against the Eagles, dating back to May 1979.
