Euro 2024: Toothless England top group despite Slovenia dour draw

After an uninspired 0-0 draw in their last Group C match on Tuesday, Slovenia also qualified for the Euro 2024 knockout stages, but England ended first. England was already in the round of 16, and, despite another lackluster performance, the draw kept them top of the group with five points.

The Danes appeared to have advanced to second place due to their UEFA ranking, moving through Slovenia, pending confirmation, even though Slovenia and Denmark finished level on three points and drew 0-0 with Serbia.

With Harry Kane and Phil Foden forcing simple saves from goalkeeper Jan Oblak, and Bukayo Saka having a goal called out in the first half for offside, England had the better of the action in a dull contest with few genuine chances. Though Slovenia defended hard and attempted to block out every attack from their disappointed opponents, England controlled possession but had few shots on target.

Denmark and Slovenia wait

With a nerve-wracking 0-0 draw in Munich on Tuesday, Denmark advanced to the Euro 2024 elimination round against Serbia, who finished bottom of Group C. Despite having the majority of possession and opportunities (Christian Eriksen was leading the way from midfield), the Danes were unable to convert that into a goal in their third draw of the competition.

They will wait for UEFA to confirm if, based on disciplinary points or rankings against Slovenia, they finished second or third in the group, which will determine who they play in the round of 16. Long stretches of solid defense by Serbia prevented veteran striker Aleksandar Mitrovic from getting the chance he so richly deserves. Their two points from two draws placed them fourth in the group.

Both teams saw their goals disallowed—Serbia for offside, and Denmark for a corner that went out of play. For now, England must wait to learn their Round of 16 opponent. The website of UEFA states that England might play a third-place team from Groups D, E, or F.
