Hungary vs. Germany: Match Preview, Odds & Prediction

Germany, League A Group 3 champions, continue their first-phase campaign on Tuesday evening away to Hungary after their record-breaking triumph in the men's UEFA Nations League.

On Saturday, Julian Nagelsmann's team buried Bosnia-Herzegovina 7-0 to secure the top position in the group, while the Magyars will finish third after a 4-0 crushing of the Netherlands.

Previous Matches and Head-to-head

With only a draw versus Bosnia-Herzegovina, Germany would have secured the top spot in their Nations League group. Nagelsmann's squad had already advanced to the quarterfinals with two games remaining.

At the Europa-Park Stadion in Freiburg, the ruthless Mannschaft left nothing to chance as Tim Kleindienst and Florian Wirtz scored braces, while Kai Havertz, Jamal Musiala, and Leroy Sane all scored to create two chapters in the team's history.

Not only did Germany hand Bosnia-Herzegovina their worst loss in senior men's international football history, but they also cruised to the most decisive Nations League victory ever. It would have been surprising if Die Mannschaft hadn't scored more in Saturday's rout.

After failing to advance to the Finals in their first three attempts, Germany will finally play in the Nations League knockout phase thanks to their victory over the weekend. Nagelsmann's youthful guns are laying a marker for the 2026 World Cup.

With a three-game winning streak in all competitions, the 2014 world champions are looking well and might win four consecutive games for the first time since March 2022, when then-Barcelona manager Hansi Flick was in charge.

Hungary will finish in third place after losing badly to the Netherlands on Saturday. To avoid being relegated to the lower division, it will have to participate in a promotion/relegation playoff. Germany will play in the quarterfinals next summer.

After coach Adam Szalai's troubling medical situation (he has since informed fans that he is doing well), Marco Rossi's squad awarded Cody Gakpo and Wout Weghorst two penalties in the first half. At the same time, Denzel Dumfries and Teun Koopmeiners padded the score.

Because Germany hammered Bosnia-Herzegovina, the Hungarian national team will not immediately be demoted to League B. However, to remain in the top division, they must win a two-legged playoff against the runner-up from League B next spring.

So far this season, Rossi's squad has only won once—2-0 away against relegated Bosnia-Herzegovina—but they have avoided loss in both home games, including a respectable 1-1 draw with the Netherlands.

Having already thrashed the Hungarians at Euro 2024, Die Mannschaft has a chance to make history by beating Tuesday's hosts for the first time in 50 years after a 5-0 thrashing in September thanks to five goals scored by five players.

Hungary x Germany Team News

Even though Germany set a new record with their win on Saturday, it wasn't without cost. Jonathan Tah received a yellow card that might lead to a suspension, while Joshua Kimmich was substituted in the second half due to an ankle injury.

Even Kimmich and Nagelsmann have downplayed the defender's worry—Kimmich has even said he wants to play in the last group game—but the Mannschaft boss will err on the side of caution with a healthy Benjamin Henrichs on the bench.

Meanwhile, Nico Schlotterbeck, also coming off a suspension, will likely replace Tah in the centre of defence. Some rotation is inevitable, and it will also help Sane, Serge Gnabry, Felix Nmecha, and Alexander Nubel.

Attila Fiola, who has 61 caps for Hungary, will return from a yellow card suspension in time for their last group game, and Rossi's squad did not suffer any new injuries in their crushing defeat of the Dutch.

In preparation for Fiola's comeback, Parma's youth Botond Balogh may be benched, while Endre Botka and Bendeguz Bolla are battling it out for the right wing-back position, which Loic Nego might vacate.

But Zsolt Nagy could start at right back again with in-demand Bournemouth left defender Milos Kerkez out with a knee injury.

Our Predictions

Germany to win @ 1.52 on Sky247.ng

Whether the Dutch manage to open the Hungarians up at will on Saturday, the Germans can expect a tougher challenge from the Magyars' defence than from Bosnia-Herzegovina's backline—particularly if Nagelsmann decides to make a slew of changes.

But even a German bench team with an intimidating assault should have no trouble cruising past similar teams without any motivation.
