Leganes vs. Real Madrid: Copa Dey Rey Match Preview, Odds & Prediction

On Wednesday, Real Madrid will face Leganes in a last-eight matchup, and the stakes couldn't be higher: a spot in the Copa del Rey semi-finals is at stake. The match is only across the city.

Los Blancos will seek revenge after losing to Espanyol in their last league match, while Leganes will hope to recover from their home loss to Rayo Vallecano.

Previous Matches and Head-to-head

Carlos Romero, who was lucky to avoid a red card for an earlier challenge on Kylian Mbappe, scored Real Madrid's lone goal in a 1-0 loss to relegation-threatened Espanyol at the RCDE Stadium on Saturday, delaying Real Madrid's La Liga championship quest.

Real Madrid's first loss since December 4 has reduced their advantage over Atletico Madrid to a single point, bringing the two teams to Saturday's derby matchup at the Santiago Bernabeu.

In the meantime, Barcelona trailed their Clasico opponents by just four points, showing that Los Blancos still had a long way to go before they could defend their La Liga title.

On Wednesday, however, they'll put their championship hopes on wait to concentrate on a cup match; the visitors will be making their second trip to the quarterfinals in three seasons after advancing through the first two rounds of the Copa del Rey.

Starting their Copa del Rey campaign with a 5-0 thrashing of fourth-tier Deportivo Minera, Carlo Ancelotti's troops went on to clinch a 5-2 extra-time victory against Celta Vigo, despite having trailed 2-0 in their last-16 match.

Because of their 20-time Copa del Rey title, their 3-0 away win against Leganes in November, and Mbappe, Federico Valverde, and Jude Bellingham's goals, the 20-time champions will be big favorites to progress from the quarterfinal round.

Leganes made it through the Copa del Rey group stage and are now in the quarterfinals. In a potentially deciding encounter, they will face the defending European champions.

In the first round, Leganes narrowly defeated Cuidad de Lucena. In the second round, they defeated fourth-tier Estepona on penalties. They narrowly defeated Segunda Division team Cartagena in the third round, 2-1.

Last month, in the quarterfinals, Borja Jimenez's club defeated another second-tier side, Almeria, 3-2 after falling 2-1. Diego Garcia scored the game-winning goal in the 86th minute, and Miguel de la Fuente converted a penalty.

With the victories against Cartagena and Almeria, Los Pepineros went five games without a loss in all competitions. Their stellar play also included a surprising 1-0 home victory over Atletico Madrid and a spirited goalless draw at San Mames against Athletic Bilbao.

Los Pepineros were defeated by Rayo Vallecano 1-0 in Friday's La Liga home match, ending Leganes' unbeaten run. The game ended with Sergio Gonzalez's straight red card and the game-winning goal scored by Pathe Ciss, who condemned Los Pepineros to a narrow defeat. Leganes now sit in 16th place, two points above the relegation zone.

Leganes will face a formidable challenge in Wednesday's cup tie, losing four of their last five home games. However, they can draw motivation from their heroic performance in the 2017–18 Copa del Rey quarterfinal, where they advanced on away goals after a 2-2 draw in the first leg.

Leganes x Real Madrid Team News

The home team still misses Enrique Franquesa, who hurt his anterior cruciate ligament in November and will be out for a long time.

Following Franquesa's substitution due to a hamstring injury sustained in Friday's loss to Rayo, midfielder Seydouba Cisse has also been taken to the dressing room.

The former Celta Vigo midfielder Renato Tapia is now scheduled to start Wednesday's cup fixture after being substituted for Cisse in the 23rd minute of the 1-0 loss.

González will play a role in defense even though he was sent off against Rayo; his suspension is being served in La Liga.

Eduardo Camavinga missed Real Madrid's previous five matches due to a hamstring injury, while injuries also sidelined Dani Carvajal and Eder Militao.

After Saturday's loss to Espanyol, Ancelotti will have to change the starting lineup due to Antonio Rudiger's hamstring injury. Rudiger is anticipated to miss three weeks of play.

At the RCDE Stadium, Rudiger was substituted for Raul Asencio in the 15th minute; the 21-year-old will likely start Wednesday's cup match with Aurelien Tchouameni in center defense.

After being granted the opportunity to start in Real Madrid's first two Copa del Rey matches, Andriy Lunin will most likely be entrusted with protecting himself from Asencio and Tchouameni.

Ancelotti may be inclined to rotate his starting lineup for the quarterfinal encounter to invigorate his team for the next matches against Manchester City and Atletico Madrid. Ferland Mendy, Luka Modric, and Brahim Diaz are among the players who might be considered for that spot.

Our predictions

Real Madrid to win @ 1.40 on Sky247.ng

Leganes will probably defend deep and try to cause Real Madrid problems on the counter, a strategy they failed to implement in Saturday's league match against Espanyol.

However, the away team's firepower will be too much for the home team to overcome, as they have previously won comfortably in Butarque this season.
