Medellin vs. Palestino: Match Preview, Odds & Predictions

Last Thursday, at Estadio Hernan Ramirez Villegas, Independiente Medellin's players showed remarkable resiliency as they earned a 2-2 draw against Palestino in the first leg of their Copa Sudamericana last-16 encounter.

Palestino took the lead in the 41st minute with two goals from Ivan Roman and Nicolas Linares, which equalized the score. However, Joaquin Varela scored his second goal in the 93rd minute to make it 1-1.

Previous Matches and Head-to-head

Jonathan Marulanda and Fredy Montero scored for Deportivo Cali in a 2-0 victory against Independiente Medellin on August 5. This sent the former club to its first 2018 Colombian top-flight season loss.

After a scoreless first three games of the 2024 Primera A season, Marcus Vinicius scored in the 45th minute to give Alejandro Restrepo's squad a 1-0 win against Boyaca Chico on August 1.

In their opening match of the Copa Sudamericana on April 5, the El Rojo Paisa lost to Bolivian team Bolivar 2-0. They will now resume their pursuit of a first-ever championship.

Still, Medellin won the group by a two-point margin over Always Ready thanks to a four-game winning streak, a tie, and a goal differential of sixteen to five in their last five matches.

In August, Palestino's Pablo Palacio faced up against Independiente Medellin.

However, Palestino's losing streak in Chile's Primera Division continued on Sunday at the Estadio Municipal Nicolas Chahuan Nazar when they were defeated 2-1 by Union La Calera.

The visitors had almost 65 per cent of the ball and were in command for most of the match. Still, they were forced to pay for their offensive inefficiency as David Romero scored twice against the flow of play to give Union the victory.

With their 4-1 triumph against O'Higgins at the Estadio Hernan Ramirez Villegas on August 9, Palestino had gone winless in their previous six league matches, losing four and drawing one.

After last week's deadlock with Medellin, Lucas Bovaglio's squad will focus on the Sudamericana, where they advanced to the knockout round with a 3-2 win against Cuiaba of Brazil.

The Tricolor began the season in the Copa Libertadores. Still, after six matches, they finished third in Group E with seven points, relegating them to the second division of South American football.

Although Palestino has drawn its past three matches against Medellin, it did win the 2019 Copa Libertadores second qualifying round match on penalties. Wednesday's match will be the return leg of that match.

Medellin x Palestino Team News

The 23-year-old Brayan Leon Muniz has been outstanding for Independiente Medellin in the Copa Sudamericana, contributing six goals and three assists. He is expected to spearhead the offence once again.

We anticipate that Diego Moreno, Baldomero Perlaza, and Jaime Alvarado, who was once of Athletico Paranaense, will remain in the middle of the field, with striking partner Luis Sandoval and Muniz forming the front two.

Jimer Fory, Varela, Fainer Torijano, Jose Ortiz, and Leyser Chaverra will likely start in defence, protecting Eder Chaux, who is 32 years old.

Midfielder Nicolas Meza, 22, has been out with a cruciate ligament injury since December and will not be available for Palestino's match.

The Paraguayan attacker Junior Marabel was sent off in Sunday's match against Union. Still, he is free to play for the Tricolor despite serving a ban only valid for the Chilean Primera Division.

Watch out for Linares, a 28-year-old midfielder who has already contributed to four goals in the tournament; he scored twice in last week's return match against Medellin.
