Liverpool manager Arne Slot saw his team extend their Premier League title lead to eight points after a thrilling 2-2 draw with Aston Villa at Villa Park on Wednesday. The match, originally scheduled for Week 29, was moved forward due to Liverpool’s upcoming League Cup Final against Newcastle United.

The Reds took an early lead through Mohamed Salah but quickly found themselves trailing after Villa responded with two quick goals. Salah then turned provider, setting up Trent Alexander-Arnold for a deflected equalizer. The game was a rollercoaster, with both teams creating chances, but neither could find a winner.

This result comes amid a busy schedule for Liverpool, who have played three Premier League matches in eight days. They drew with Everton and Villa while securing a narrow 2-1 win over Wolves. While Slot might have hoped for more from this stretch, he’ll take pride in his team’s resilience to fight back and claim a point against a strong Villa side.

Reflecting on the match, Slot shared his thoughts: “It was a great game. Going into halftime 2-1 down, it didn’t feel like the game was going our way. I was disappointed to concede just before the break, but I felt we were playing well. We came back to make it 2-2 and had chances to win it, but in the end, the ball could’ve gone either way. Both teams played really well, but I’m not entirely happy with the result, considering the chances we created.”

He added:
“I thought we defended well overall—I can’t recall many clear chances for Villa. The only thing I’m not happy with is the set-piece balance. At a place like Villa Park, you need to be neutral in that aspect, and we weren’t. That said, we created more than enough opportunities to score a winner.”

Slot also addressed the challenges of maintaining their title lead: “Every team has to play everyone twice, and this week we faced Villa away and City away. It’s tough, but we didn’t lose either game. The only thing we can blame is missing a few chances. We’ve had moments where we didn’t get what we deserved, and we can’t let that become a habit.”

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk also weighed in:
“It’s a bit disappointing. We had chances to win at the end, but we’ll take the point and move on. In possession, we did quite well and created good opportunities. Conceding from a set piece was frustrating, but we tried everything to find an equalizer. Credit to Villa—they made it difficult for us, as they always do. Now, we focus on the next game and keep fighting.”

Looking ahead, Van Dijk emphasized the importance of staying focused: “This is the Premier League—it’s physical and demanding for everyone. We have a tough game against Man City coming up, followed by Newcastle. Every match is a battle, and we have to fight for every second to win games and collect points. Our only task is to focus on ourselves. It’s easier said than done, but that’s what we must do.”

Liverpool’s title charge continues, but with challenging fixtures ahead, Slot and his team know there’s no room for complacency.
