Liverpool on the Brink of 20th Title as Arsenal Slip Against Palace
Liverpool are one step away from matching Manchester United’s record of 20 top-flight titles after Arsenal were held to a dramatic 2-2 draw by Crystal Palace at the Emirates on Wednesday night.
Despite twice taking the lead through Jakub Kiwior and Leandro Trossard, Arsenal couldn’t hold on. Eberechi Eze volleyed in Palace’s first equaliser before substitute Jean-Philippe Mateta stunned the home crowd with a brilliant late chip to secure a point.
The result leaves Arsenal on 67 points with just four games remaining. Liverpool, on 79 points with five matches left, now need just a single point at home to Tottenham on Sunday to clinch the Premier League crown.
After the game, Mateta explained his decisive goal: “When I saw Raya off his line, I knew if I won the ball, I could try — and I did. It’s one of the best goals of my career.”
Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta reflected on his side’s faltering title challenge: “We haven’t seen games off. Margins have been too small. We’ve had red cards, small moments, and failed to manage leads better.”
With their league hopes all but over, Arsenal now turn to Europe. They face PSG in the Champions League semifinals, a trophy Arteta admitted was top of the squad’s wishlist.
“In pre-season, I asked: ‘PL or UCL?’ and they all picked the UCL. That’s our focus now — congratulations to Liverpool, but we’ll be back stronger next season.”
