Liverpool vs Everton: EPL Match Preview, Odds & Prediction

On Wednesday night, in the Premier League, long-time rivals Liverpool and Everton will face off at Anfield for the second Merseyside derby in as many months.

Although Everton's 98th-minute equalizer by James Tarkowski at Goodison Park in February was a fitting derby goodbye for the Grand Old Lady, Liverpool's championship aspirations remain unabated despite the setback.

Previous Matches and Head-to-head

After the dreadful week leading up to the international break, Liverpool fans would have been quite gloomy about the team's chances of obtaining another routine home victory over their local rivals had this match occurred two weeks earlier.

Tragically, Arne Slot's team had a treble dream dashed when they lost the Champions League to Paris Saint-Germain at Anfield on Tuesday and then lost the EFL Cup final to Newcastle United at Wembley on Sunday. With just one front left to defend in the remaining two months of the season, they had no choice but to settle for a disappointing finish.

Even though Liverpool's most recent league match was a dismal home loss to Southampton, they still have twelve points on a failing Arsenal. They are coasting to their second Premier League championship in five years.

Except for their last-16 match against PSG, the hosts have not lost a Premier League game since falling to Nottingham Forest in game week four. In their past 19 home games, they have won 17 and drawn 2.

Also, Liverpool has scored in each of their fifteen home league meetings, and it's been almost ten years since they lost a derby, except except the one played at a neutral venue in 2020–21.

In a dramatic derby in February, Everton scored a late equalizer before the game ended in injury time. Then. Then Abdoulaye Doucoure and Curtis Jones were sent out for fighting after the final buzzer.

With 25 red cards, this match is now second all-time in the Premier League, behind only Chelsea-Manchester United (27). It has also resulted in a draw 26 times.

While Liverpool may be lackluster at Goodison, they are crushing it in Anfield derbies. They have won all seven of the most recent games played in front of a crowd and are undefeated in 26 this century. So, it's doubtful that we will see a repetition of that outcome.

However, Everton has transformed under Moyes's tutelage, and they are on their longest league-winning streak since February 2017.

After 10 games under Moyes's leadership, the Blue Half of Merseyside has taken as many points (17) as any club in the bottom three had all season, ending any lingering dread of relegation for a second consecutive season.

Nevertheless, Everton has seen a minor dip since Moyes won his eleventh Premier League Manager of the Month title in February. They have drawn four consecutive matches, notably lackluster showings against Wolves and West Ham United.

So far this season, 13 of Everton's 29 league games have ended in a draw, the club's most ever.

Another would do just well here, and Moyes would happily welcome it after losing his past nine visits to Anfield and still without a win here (19 of those losses were in the Premier League—the longest run ever endured by a manager away to a single team in that competition).

Liverpool x Everton Team News

Liverpool has been plagued by injuries this season, and the proper back position is particularly troublesome. Slot was without his three starting right backs—Trent Alexander-Arnold, Joe Gomez, and Conor Bradley—for the EFL Cup final.

Ryan Gravenberch and Alisson withdrew from international duty last week but are expected to return soon since their injuries are not considered significant.

Darwin Nunez, Diogo Jota, and Luis Diaz have all taken heat for their play as of late, but one of them will start up front with Mohamed Salah and Cody Gakpo. Federico Chiesa's goal in the cup final won't be enough to get him the nod.

Even though neither Iliman Ndiaye nor Dwight McNeil will be available for this match, Everton is starting to assemble their best starting eleven after a problematic season owing to injuries.

Doucoure, who was sent off in the last match but should start behind the striker this time, will be joined by Carlos Alcaraz, Jesper Lindstrom, and Jack Harrison in vying for the starting positions at wide receiver.

Vitalii Mykolenko is doubtful with a thigh injury picked up on international duty. At the same time, Dominic Calvert-Lewin remains sidelined up front. Still, Armando Broja returned shortly before the break, where he played twice for Albania and will provide competition to Beto.

Our Predictions

Liverpool to win & Under 3.5 goals @ 1.96 on Sky247.ng

The international break couldn't have come at a better moment for a Liverpool team whose season looked like it would fizzle out after their dreams of winning two major awards went up in smoke. With two weeks to regroup and get his players back on track, Slot has done just that.

Even though they are riding a nine-game winning streak, Everton's record at Anfield this century is among the worst of any Premier League club. Their only victory came in a friendly setting in 2021, and they will likely suffer an eighth consecutive loss in front of an audience.
