Manchester United vs. Ipswich Town: EPL Match Preview, Odds & Prediction

On Wednesday, Manchester United will host relegation-favored Ipswich Town at Old Trafford in the Premier League, hoping to end a terrible home form.

Man Utd were lucky to escape Goodison Park with a draw in a controversial match against Everton. At the same time, Ipswich were humiliated once again over the weekend, moving them closer to an immediate return to the Championship.

Previous Matches and Head-to-head

Man Utd was lucky to escape with a draw from Everton on Saturday morning, their last trip to Goodison Park, after returning from a 2-0 deficit.

Ruben Amorim's team was again unable to live up to expectations, so falling 2-0 was no big deal. However, they had a chance to pull one back before Bruno Fernandes converted a free kick.

In the minutes that followed, Manuel Ugarte tied the score. However, United was spared punishment when referee Andy Madley, using video assistant referee technology despite not seeing all possible angles, reversed his original judgment after Harry Maguire and Matthijs de Ligt tugged on Ashley Young's jersey.

Despite the comeback, Manchester United is still in second place in the league, while West Ham United, which is in sixteenth place, is now tied with them on points after their victory over Arsenal.

With only 12 points separating them from the European spots, Manchester United may have a tranquil season without any continental play in 2019–2020 unless they win the FA Cup or Europa League.

Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee have yet to score in the league in 2025, and the squad is on the verge of setting a new club record by failing to score in eleven consecutive Premier League matches—the attack has been a significant issue.

In addition, United failed to score in the first half of their last eleven league games. This includes United's 3-1 loss against Brighton & Hove Albion at Old Trafford, one of seven home Premier League defeats for Amorim's side since taking command.

Despite not having played Ipswich since 2015, the hosts are now two losses shy of matching their most excellent league total in over sixty years.

The last league encounter occurred in 2001, a few years after United notably achieved a Premier League record margin of victory when they thrashed Ipswich 9-0 in 1995—a performance that has been repeated but not beaten—and this was in a third-round fixture for the League Cup.

In 1984, Ipswich stunned Manchester United by coming from behind to win 2-1 at Old Trafford. Since then, 388 games have passed without a loss for Manchester United in league play at home after taking a halftime lead.

With relegation concerns heightened over the weekend after a 4-1 home defeat to Tottenham Hotspur, Kieran McKenna's squad needs a similar performance to rekindle survival hopes.

With Wolves' victory against Bournemouth, the three promoted teams are now anticipated to return to the second division quickly, and the margin between the bottom three and safety is currently five points.

Ipswich have gone winless in their previous six league games. A week ago, they earned a point in a surprising draw with Aston Villa despite playing with a 10-man roster for nearly half the game.

On the other hand, the Tractor Boys' ten road victories this season outnumber their seven home victories, so the visitors may be secretly relieved to be playing away from Portman Road.

In the top four divisions of England, only Southampton has scored fewer home points than Ipswich. Also, only Southampton, Morecambe, and Shrewsbury Town have lost more often. Despite this, McKenna's team did manage to earn a point in the reverse fixture against United, which coincidentally was Amorim's first game in charge.

Manchester United x Ipswich Town Team News

With the return of Ugarte, Leny Yoro, and Christian Eriksen to Everton, Amorim had access to more experienced players after starting eight adolescents against Spurs.

Toby Collyer shouldn't be far behind either, but players like Mason Mount, Kobbie Mainoo, and Luke Shaw can say goodbye for now.

Chido Obi, who had a significant impact off the bench at Goodison, may get additional playing time due to the injury to Amad Diallo, which will keep Lisandro Martinez out for the remainder of the season.

Kalvin Phillips and Jens Cajuste, two more Ipswich players, were substituted over the weekend due to injuries: Phillips to his calf and Cajuste to his ankle, respectively.

Wes Burns will miss the rest of the season due to a knee injury, but Conor Chaplin may be able to make a full recovery in time for this matchup after suffering a less serious issue with the same muscle. Sam Morsy and Sammie Szmodics are on the bench, and both bounced back from weekend setbacks.

Ben Godfrey, who performed poorly against Spurs and was taken off during the half, may be replaced by Axel Tuanzebe, a former Manchester United defender who has returned from suspension.

Our Predictions

Man Utd to win & Over 2.5 goals @ 2.03 on Sky247.ng

Once again, Manchester United deceived over the weekend, and their home record is much worse. However, Amorim's players should have enough to pull off the most significant shock against a team doomed to the relegation zone.

For the Tractor Boys to win, Ipswich will need to put their shooting boots on. Their lone clean sheet of the season came in a scoreless stalemate with Brighton earlier in the campaign, so even that may not be enough.
