Tottenham Hotspur vs. Manchester City: EPL Match Preview, Odds & Prediction

On Wednesday night, in the most anticipated midweek match, Ange Postecoglou's Tottenham Hotspur will face off against Manchester City, the reigning Premier League winners, in a match that might go down in English football lore.

Tottenham might make history in 2024–25 by becoming the first side to ever defeat both Manchester giants—Manchester City twice and Manchester United three times—in the same season.

Previous Matches and Head to head

Ipswich Town's early custodian Liam Delap's bullying of the Tottenham defenders did not bode well for Saturday's 4-1 thrashing of the newly-promoted side at Portman Road, as Tottenham avenged their shocking home loss to the Tractor Boys earlier in the season.

Brennan Johnson, making his Premier League debut after a month-long absence, scored twice with help from Son Heung-min. Djed Spence, a reinvigorated right defender, and Dejan Kulusevski, an outstanding forward, both contributed.

The Lilywhites found their rhythm and marched to their third straight Premier League victory, solidifying their position in 12th place in the league, after being momentarily troubled by Omari Hutchinson's silky first-time shot.

Even though Postecoglou has admitted that Spurs' current status is undesirable, the North London giants have, predictably, put an end to any rumours of a relegation battle after the return from injury of many key players.

The hosts on Wednesday are aiming to win four games in a row in the Premier League for the first time since October 2023, when Postecoglou was in charge of the English capital. Tottenham have not let in a goal in three of their last four games, after conceding in 10 straight from October 30 to January 4.

While the Lilywhites' incredible 18-game scoring run at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium is certainly a plus, Man City's 16-game scoring streak in all competitions, both at home and away, came to an end at the end of play on Sunday evening.

The blue half of Manchester and the red half of North London came out in force to cheer Pep Guardiola's squad as they fell to a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Liverpool, who seemed unstoppable in their pursuit of Premier League gold. Goals scored by Mohamed Salah and Dominik Szoboszlai sealed the deal.

Even though they dominated possession at the Etihad, the holders' lack of a focal point—exacerbated by the ineffectiveness of injured forward Erling Haaland—was a major factor in their third consecutive defeat in all competitions, with their other two losses coming at the hands of Real Madrid.

Even though Chelsea and Aston Villa's victories on Tuesday would drop Guardiola's squad to sixth place in the Premier League, they remain within striking distance of securing a last top-four spot; yet, the visitors have won just twice in their previous nine Premier League away games.

After losing to Tottenham 4-0 in the Premier League and 2-1 in the EFL Cup this season, the champions should approach with care at one of their least favourite haunts. Their two victories were against relegation-threatened teams, Leicester City and Ipswich Town, respectively.

Tottenham Hotspur vs. Manchester City

Postecoglou has only five players who will miss Wednesday's big game due to injury: Radu Dragusin (ACL), Dominic Solanke (knee), Richarlison (calf), Cristian Romero (thigh), and Micky van de Ven (thigh). Tottenham may still have a long way to go before they have a completely healthy roster again.

Ben Davies was benched to focus on managing workloads, while Timo Werner's hamstring issue may improve in time for him to play a role in the match versus City—a team he has scored a goal against this season in the EFL Cup.

Postecoglou benched Pedro Porro and James Maddison from the starting lineup at Portman Road for the same reason. However, Wednesday will be a make-or-break game for Mathys Tel since Maddison is anticipated to be promoted.

Guardiola has been unable to provide any assurances that Haaland would be fully fit for City's trip to Tottenham due to his knee injury, and the short three-day recovery period makes the two-time Golden Boot winner a major question mark for the match.

Nevertheless, if Haaland were to start and score, he would join the ranks of just one player—Harry Kane of Tottenham—to score ten goals at home and ten goals away in consecutive Premier League seasons.

Also out for Guardiola are Rodri (ACL), Oscar Bobb (ankle), Manuel Akanji (abductor), and John Stones (thigh). Guardiola started Kevin De Bruyne over the weekend, but the elderly Belgian should get the boot today.

Our Predictions

Once again, Tottenham has set the blue touch paper on fire in the final third, and they'll have the benefit of a day more of rest than the champions, who are unlikely to return home unscathed after letting in at least two goals.

Nevertheless, even without City, Haaland still managed to contribute against Liverpool. While Spurs' centre backs deserve credit for their efforts, they aren't like Virgil van Dijk or Ibrahima Konate, so Guardiola's squad can mount a strong comeback and earn a point.
