Real Madrid vs. Celta Vigo: Copa de rey Match Preview & Prediction

On Thursday, Real Madrid will host Celta Vigo at the Santiago Bernabeu in a Copa del Rey match, hoping to recover from their loss in the Spanish Super Cup.

With a 5-0 thrashing of Deportivo Minera, Los Blancos advanced to the round of 16, while Celta rallied from behind to defeat Racing Santander in the third-round match.

Previous Matches and Head-to-head

Real Madrid competed in four matches at the beginning of the year, whereas Celta only played in two. Celta had a more leisurely start to the year.

After a 2-1 league victory over Valencia and a dominating cup match against Minera to start 2025, Los Blancos headed to Saudi Arabia to defend the Spanish Super Cup they had won in 2024.

Carlo Ancelotti breezed into the final with a 3-0 victory against Mallorca, but despite Kylian Mbappe scoring the first goal in Sunday's championship match against Barcelona, Los Blancos had a dismal performance, losing 5-2 after allowing four goals in the first half.

The fact that they had lost 4-0 at home to Barcelona in October's La Liga match just added insult to injury since this was their second devastating Clasico defeat in as many months.

In Thursday's Copa del Rey match against Celta, Real Madrid will be looking to prevent a repeat performance after they failed to win the trophy in Saudi Arabia. Los Blancos aim to win the tournament for the 21st time in their history.

Their recent home games have been fruitful, as they have won their past five matches by a combined score of 16-2 at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Additionally, Real Madrid have been successful against Celta, winning all nine of their previous head-to-head encounters (including a 2-1 triumph on the road at Balaidos in October).

Although Real Madrid advanced to the third round of the Copa del Rey, Celta had to resolve three cup tie-breaks before they could go to Madrid.

The Galician team dominated the previous two rounds with 12 goals, defeating UD San Pedro and Salamanca UDS. However, in their most recent Copa del Rey match, they faced second-tier Racing Santander and had to work much harder to win.

After falling 2-1 against 10-man Santander in the 86th minute on an own goal, Celta rallied to win 3-2 in the dying seconds of regulation time courtesy of a goal from Alfon Gonzalez.

In Friday's league match against Rayo Vallecano, Los Celestes could not replicate that performance, losing 2-1 in Vallecas and dropping to 12th place in La Liga.

They will now devote themselves entirely to Thursday's match at the Santiago Bernabeu, where they know they must pull off an upset to maintain their hopes of being the first team in club history to win the Copa del Rey.

Last year, Celta advanced to the tournament's quarterfinals thanks to a 3-1 away win against Valencia so that they could repeat their performance.

The away team knows they haven't defeated Real Madrid since January 2017. However, that 2-1 triumph came in the Copa del Rey, and Celta advanced on that occasion thanks to a 4-2 aggregate win.

Real Madrid x Celta Vigo Team News

Due to anterior cruciate ligament injuries, Dani Carvajal and Eder Militao will miss the remainder of Real Madrid's season.

After going unused in both of Spain's Super Cup matches, David Alaba, an Austrian, is likely to be named to the team and make his competitive comeback after a hiatus that began in December 2023.

Mbappe, Jude Bellingham, and Federico Valverde were absent from Tuesday's group training, but they are all still expected to start.

Eduardo Camavinga, a midfielder, is unwell and may be unable to play in Thursday's Copa del Rey match.

Although Real Madrid were unsuccessful in their appeal of Vinicius Junior's red card against Valencia earlier this month, he is now free to start up front for Celta as his suspension is limited to La Liga.

The visitors' captain, Iago Aspas, is out with a muscular injury, so they'll have to do without him.

Marcos Alonso will sit out Sunday's league match against Athletic Bilbao to serve his suspension after being sent off over the weekend. He will also miss the cup match due to an ankle injury.

Due to an injury he sustained on Friday while traveling to Vallecas, Gonzalez will miss the last 16 matches and will likely be sidelined for three weeks. Gonzalez won the game in round two.

Good news: Mihailo Ristic is back in training after a time off, and Javier Rodriguez is free to play again after serving a one-match suspension.

Our predictions

Real Madrid win & Both teams to score @ 2.75 on Sky247.ng

After Real Madrid's devastating Super Cup loss in the Middle East last weekend, they are now demanding a swift resolution in this country. When the focus returns to the Copa del Rey, Los Blancos will know how critical it is to pick themselves up promptly. Their impressive record against Thursday's opponents, Celta Vigo, includes a 2-1 victory in their most recent meeting on October 19th. Given Ancelotti's men's remarkable streak of nine consecutive wins over the Sky Blues, their status as a heavy favorite is not surprising.
