Suriname vs Mexico: Gold Cup Match Preview, Odds & Predictions

On Wednesday night, at AT&T Stadium in Texas, Suriname will face Mexico in the final match of Group A play at the CONCACAF Gold Cup.

The first group match of the weekend saw Costa Rica defeat Suriname 5-3, while El Tri just held on to win the Dominican Republic 3-2.

Previous Matches and Head-to-head

Suriname had a golden opportunity on Sunday to win the Gold Cup for the first time in almost four years, but they were brutally denied in the final moments.

After taking a 2-0 lead with less than 15 minutes to play, Stanely Menzo's team crumbled and let up two goals in the dying minutes, including the game-winning penalty kick in the thirteenth minute of stoppage time.

Their four-match winning streak in all competitions came to an end with the loss, their first since November 2024, when they were defeated 3-0 by Canada.

In their last five meetings against North American teams, they have suffered defeat while scoring zero goals in everyone.

While Suriname has started the scoring in five of their Gold Cup matches overall, they have only won once, a 2-1 victory against Guadeloupe in July 2021.

Since Canada's two-legged quarterfinal victory over Natio in November, the national team has not lost consecutive matches against CONCACAF opponents.

In their first match of the tournament, Mexico just escaped a frustrating Dominican team despite allowing five shots on goal.

Even though Javier Aguirre's team didn't score until the second half, they've won 11 games in a row when they've scored first.

Even if they won the trophy for a record 12th time in 2023, the defending champions allowed as many goals on Saturday as they did during the whole tournament.

El Tri have not lost a group stage match since 2007 (2-1 vs Honduras), and they have won their past seven Gold Cup matches in a row.

If Mexico beats the Dominican Republic on Wednesday and Costa Rica beats them, they will advance to the quarterfinals of the Gold Cup.

Their next match will be the fourth time these two teams have met, and Mexico holds a commanding 16-1 series lead against Suriname.

Suriname x Mexico Team News

While Suriname's record goalscorer Gleofilo Vlijter dropped to sixth place all-time with 30 appearances in their loss to Costa Rica, he may climb up to fourth place if he plays on Wednesday. Shaquille Pinas tied for ninth place with 27 caps for the national side.

On Sunday, Gyrano Kerk, Pinas, and Richonell Margaret all scored in a loss; Richonell Margaret scored his first national team goal.

Due to injuries suffered by Jesus Angulo late last month, Hirving Lozano, and Henry Martin during training, Mexico will be depleted in player depth for this event.

El Tri won the first match thanks to a brace from Raul Jimenez, who extended his El Tri goal-scoring record to 40. Cesar Montes and Edson Alvarez also found the back of the net.
