Man City Beat Man United To Win Community Shield

Manchester City won the season-opening match in a penalty shootout at Wembley, giving them early bragging rights over Manchester United. Pep Guardiola's team won thanks to two failed penalty shots by Jadon Sancho and Johnny Evans after Bernardo Silva canceled out Alejandro Garnacho's opening.

Following a 1-1 tie in regulation time, Manchester City defeated Manchester United 7-6 in a spot shootout to claim the 2024 FA Community Shield.

City ended a three-year losing streak in this event (2021, 2022 and 2023) and won the top-flight curtain raiser for the first time since overcoming Liverpool 5-4 on penalties in 2019.

With eight minutes remaining in regular time, Manchester United substitute Alejandro Garnacho seemed to have won the Community Shield with a superb strike that he cut inside and hammered home.

Just eight minutes after coming in as a replacement, Bernardo Silva rose up in the 89th minute and headed home a cross from Oscar Bobb, changing the game.

After regulation play ended, Pep Guardiola's squad proceeded to a penalty shootout for the fourth time in six seasons to decide the Community Shield. Manuel Akanji scored the game-winning penalty after Jonny Evans missed the target, and his team won 7-6.

Talking Point - Winning is a habit

The FA Community Shield isn't exactly a significant trophy conversation starter, but it was a match that both teams were hoping to win. Everything was in place: a Manchester derby, the first game of the Premier League season, and an opportunity for Manchester City to exact revenge for their loss to their rivals in the FA Cup final three months before. City had lost the last three Community Shields (2021, 2022, and 2023) and still went on to achieve great success, so it's safe to say that today's result wouldn't have changed their trajectory for the 2024–25 season. However, winning becomes a habit, and Pep Guardiola, of all people, will believe that, and he'll definitely be targeting more hardware for the 2024–25 season.

Player of the Match - Oscar Bobb (Man City)

The 21-year-old was Manchester City's shining star in today's match at Wembley. This is the kind of self-assured play that demonstrates why Pep Guardiola is supposedly prepared to put a great deal of confidence in the player this year. Bobb made only two Premier League starts (out of fourteen appearances) last season, but he will get much more action this year if he keeps up his impressive form from today. His performance today was well justified, and the magical moment that set up Bernardo Silva's equalizer was his assist.
